I have to hard disagree, his use of the dark arts is the direct cause of his disfigurement. The forbidden curses are forbidden for a reason :) Painful, sure, but only for a moment, since Harry didnt specifically want to torture her for his own sadistic pleasure, didn't want to make her suffer worse than she had ever suffered, didn't want her to scream until her throat bled, wailing in otherwordly suffering and pain, wishing she was able to beg for the release of death if only she could stop screaming for long enough. It caused no more than a grunt and a yelp if i remember. It had done what it was cast to do, hurt someone. But the moment she did, the curse was completed. Neither of which is a fuel source for the Cruciatus. He didn't cast it out of sadistic, malicious desire, he cast it because he was angry and wanted vengeance. That is why Harry's curse fizzled when he used it on Bellatrix. The Cruciatus curse is about wanting to torture someone out of their skull. If you want to hurt someone just punch them in the face. The Cruciatus curse is fueled by your sadistic glee in causing pain. Basically, it wasn't so much that Harry was "turning into Voldemort" as much as it was the shard of Voldemort's soul leaking into Harry. Harry didn't want to actually torture Bellatrix out of her skull, like Nevilles parents were, he was just angry and bereft over losing Sirius, his "fuel" for the curse was grief, not sadism or hatred, and he didn't take pleasure with it.Īnd the thing with Harry feeling closer to Voldemort that was later revealed to be because he was Voldemorts horcrux, that is why he started to feel closer to voldemort the more voldemort was regaining power. Painful to be sure, but not like it would be if say Voldemort used it. His Cruciatus didnt cause much more than a grunt and a yelp from Bellatrix. Otherwise the curse will fizzle, as it did with harry. Cruciatus curse requires you to take sadistic pleasure in the pain, it needs to be cast for it's own sake, with malicious intent, not hindered by some righteous goal like avenging Sirius. The thing is, his anger and hatred was too weak.
